Reading for pleasure

As the old saying goes, "A book holds a house of gold; a book holds a face as smooth as jade". The problem is, however, in the present world, even if you own a house full of gold, marry a good wife and raise a filial son, it doesn’t guarantee happiness. Many surveys show that most of the happiest countries are developing countries, with wealth thus not necessarily equating to happiness.
Nevertheless, I still believe that reading can imbue happiness as reading a good book not only brings temporary satisfaction but is also a way of learning how philosophers, psychologists, religious figures, and even ordinary people acquire happiness. In the current issue of Books and the City, "Ode to Joy" introduces more than a dozen books imparting the ways to happiness. I wish everyone a Happy New Year!
The previous Books and the City has just been published and received an enthusiastic response. I sincerely hope that the people of Macao will enjoy reading more than ever - thus spreading the scent of books all around the city!
